Sport-Related Injuries And Podiatry
Sports and exercise are important for both physical and psychological well-being and a large percentage of the population undertake them for recreation or in competition. Unfortunately, there is a risk of injury with the participation in physical activity. Sport Injuries occur for many interrelated reasons involving physiological, psychological and mechanical factors. What is a sports injury? 'A sports injury is one which occurs as a result of participation in sports and limits athletic participation for at least a day after onset.' This was accepted as the definition by the Council of Europe (1998). Most exercise involves running or walking to a greater or lesser degree. It is therefore not too surprising to hear that a large percentage of injuries occur in the lower limbs. Here at the Montagu Clinic we have over fourteen years of experience dealing with the mechanical alignment of the lower limb and have had considerable success with the treatment of many sports injuries.
An accurate measurement of the subtalar joint is obtained by the use of a digital biometer. From this information, one is able to produce a reliable prescription for the insoles called orthoses. The orthoses are fabricated to a high specification by one of the United Kingdom's longest established laboratories. This is possible because of a carefully taken plaster cast which faithfully captures the foot's forefoot to rearfoot relationship whilst held in correct alignment with the lower leg.
